What does it mean to work WITH instead of FOR your community? Now more than ever, we need safe community spaces where people can listen to each other. How can museums and science centers increase our relevance and contribute to powerful community change? Explora in Albuquerque, NM made a decision to turn outwards, using the community as a reference point for strategic planning and design making. Formal listening sessions have helped Explora staff understand their community and its rhythms, teaching them about the aspirations, concerns, and challenges shared by citizens of Albuquerque. This listening process has created a framework around which Explora can engage more deeply and serve as a relevant community anchor and change agent.
